ROTARY CLUB OF BROOKFIELD
P.O. Box 5248
Brookfield, Connecticut 06804-5248
Let us never forget…
Indeed, let us never forget the horrible pain we all felt on the morning of September 11, 2001. Let us never forget the heroic efforts by the men and women at Ground Zero, the firemen, the policemen, the medical personnel, and the scores of other volunteers, who saved so many lives in the wake of that senseless attack.
Let us never forget that the tragedy reached up to Brookfield. Judith Hofmiller of Brookfield perished in the North Tower.
Let us never forget the bravery of servicemen and women who gave their lives to preserve our freedom like Lance Corporal John T. Schmidt III, who died of injuries from an explosion January 30 in Anbar Province, Iraq.
Let us never forget the senseless bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 falling from the sky over Lockerbie, Scotland killing Brookfield resident Elizabeth Marek.
The most important thing for us to remember is that these attacks were the efforts of an extreme minority, which speaks for no section of humankind. Most people have the same hopes and dreams we all do: health, fellowship, and better lives for ourselves and our families. We want to live in peace and safety, and Rotary International, through its 31,000 Rotary clubs throughout the world, lives by the motto “Peace through Understanding.”
The Rotary Club of Brookfield, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rotary’s founding, has planned a very special gift to the citizens of the Brookfield Community. It is our goal to create the Rotary Memorial Garden on the grounds of the Brookfield Municipal Center. There will be special memorials for Judith Hofmiller, Lance Corporal John T. Schmidt, and Elizabeth Marek.
|
The Rotary Memorial Garden will offer a sanctuary with plants, trees, and benches where anyone may relax, read a book, have lunch, or simply reflect on the meaning of the Garden. Upon completion, the Garden will be turned over to the town of Brookfield for all citizens to enjoy.

Roderick Cameron’s landscape design of the Rotary Memorial Garden
|
While the Memorial Garden is a community project spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Brookfield, recognition goes to others who have assisted in moving the project forward. Mr. Rod Cameron from the architectural firm of CCA donated his time to plan the Garden and spent countless hours to assist us in securing approval from town boards. Contractor Joe Grimes is donating the necessary excavation work and will supply the guidance to move the project along smoothly.

Let us go forward together…
Brookfield Rotarians are all part of this community. We live and work here and want to make a partnership with you to make the dream of the Rotary Memorial Garden a reality. Simply put, we need your help. We need to buy trees, shrubs, benches, and garden sculptures. We’re willing to do the work to create the Garden, but we need your support, your memorial dollars, to bring this cause to fruition. All contributions are welcome and will be recognized. Contributors at the Emerald level or above will have added recognition on a permanent memorial plaque.

Pictured above is Brookfield Rotary Centennial Project Chairman, Robert Morey on the left and the landscape architect, Roderick Cameron, who developed the plan as a gift to the town.
Roderick Cameron’s landscape design would dress up the landscape directly in front of the Brookfield Town Hall to include walkways, benches, flowering shrubs, several additional trees, and flower beds. The proposal would allow for small, tasteful plaques or perhaps bricks acknowledging donors or as a memoriam.
